Manly's little penguins expand. Their coloring is used to help them to blend in with the landscape and avoid predators. The common wombat has coarse fur and short, round ears. The two species of hairy-nosed wombats have soft fur and much larger ears. Wombats may have a cute, teddy bear-like experience, but do not let their appearance fool you, they are known to be aggressive when they feel threatened. Wombats are completely herbivorous, eating grasses, plants, herbs, roots, bark, and mosses.
They spend most of their time grazing, using their rodent-like teeth and very strong jaws to grip and tear their food. Wombats have a special stomach gland that helps them easily digest these tough foods. They are nocturnal animals so they can often be found grazing at night. Wombats live in the woodlands, coastlands, mountain forests, and shrublands of southeast Australia.
Wombat burrows, which can be 10 to feet long and Wombats have different burrows for different purposes. The preferred habitats of a wombat is hilly or mountainous coastal country, creeks and gullies. Wombats are herbivores and feed up on grass, roots of shrubs and tress and fungi. They can graze for up to 8 hours a night and travel quite far from their burrows in search of food. Wombats are burrowers and will dig out burrows measuring 30 metres feet long.
Burrows will have one entrance but may branch out into different chambers. The wombat makes its nest in one of these chambers and it will be lined with grass, bark and leaves. Wombats are usually nocturnal but will sometimes bask in the sun in specially prepared spots close to the entrance of its burrow. Wombats live in large home ranges and although they tend to be solitary, neighbouring territories can overlap considerably. Although wombats are sometimes aggressive towards each other in captivity, some observations suggest that they often make visits to each others burrows in the wild.
This is a winning combination from the perspective of a wombat. The long digestion time and extra-long colon allows wombats to extract as much nutrition and water as they possibly can from their food. The shape is good for communication, too. Wombats have terrible eyesight but an excellent sense of smell, so they use faeces as a way of communicating to tell each other who lives where and whether a female is ready to mate. While the shape may be a bit weird, producing cubic poop has proven to be a smart strategy.
All about wombat scat There is a lot we can learn from poop. The common wombat, Vombatus ursinus , is one of the three wombat species and the producer of oddly-shaped droppings.
