In the Southern Christian Conference adopted a resolution committing the church to establish a college. Six years later the provisional board of the proposed college accepted an offer of 50 acres of land at Mill Point, a freight loading station on the North Carolina Railroad later the Norfolk Southern five miles west of Burlington.

The school was named Elon, the Hebrew word for oak, because the site was covered with a variety of massive oaks. Three students were graduated at the first commencement exercises on 2 June In order to raise funds for the school, streets were laid out around the site and commercial and residential lots were sold. The community was incorporated in as the town of Elon College. On 18 June a fire destroyed the school's main building, which housed the library, classrooms, the chapel, and faculty and administrative offices.

Construction of five new buildings-three classroom and office buildings, a library, and an auditorium-began the same year. These five buildings remain at the heart of the central campus. Elon began offering graduate degrees in business administration and education in the s, and by the early s it was the third-largest private school in North Carolina.

Elon is one of two private colleges in the state selected to offer the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program. Enrollment totals about 5,, including graduate students. Today, Elon University is a private liberal arts university. The campus is a certified botanical garden featuring brick sidewalks, oak trees, fountains, and lakes.

Starting in , President Leo M. Lambert is the current president of the University. The Ernest A. Kourey Sr. Business Center was opened in , with the business and communications schools receiving high accreditations in their fields. In , enrollment exceeded 4, students for the first time. The college of arts and sciences, and schools of communications and educations were then established. The Belk Library soon followed, opening in College Coffee is also a tradition at Elon University that started in Elon is also heavily into Greek life with 23 fraternities and sororities currently on campus.

WSOE , the University's student-run non-commercial campus radio station, has been airing since Elon is home to the Fire of the Carolinas Marching Band FOTC , which delivers pre-game, halftime, and occasionally post-game performances at home football games.

The Hindu population has also increased in size, [42] and while there is no formal Hindu organization on campus, Hindu students report feeling accepted at Elon.

Elon has received praise for its efforts to build a multi-faith center that is open to students of all religious traditions. Elon University recognizes 25 social Greek organizations.

Elon students conduct statewide polls on issues of importance to North Carolinians. Formed in , the non-partisan polls' results are shared with various media outlets, citizens and researchers to facilitate representative democracy and public policy making through the better understanding of the opinions and needs of North Carolina citizens. It is one of the only polls in the country that is conducted by student callers as compared to hired workers.
