From natural materials like slate and wood to manmade products such as asphalt, sheet metal, and plastic polymers, there are more types and styles of roofing to choose from today than ever before. While each has its advantages and shortcomings, they all can add a distinctive design element to your home. So which one is right for you? Some types of roofing may be better suited for your house than others.
Factors such as the slope of the roof and strength of the framing could limit your choices. In areas prone to wildfires or hurricanes, look for a product with a high fire rating or good wind resistance. In addition, steps can be taken during the installation of many types of roofing to improve their resistance to fire or wind. And how do you support them? They provide natural insulation and last many many years. I have a DaVinci plastic slate roof. It is awesome.
I understand that clay roof tile colors do not fade with time… that is also guaranteed by the manufacturers. Among all the different roof materials, which one has the best ability to resist the mold or easily get rid of the mold without using drug environment polution or when using high pressure water but withut damage the roof. Appreciate the answers! Hi Luoming, There are several possibilities. If the culprit is plain old mold, a metal roof is probably your best bet, though it mayl be noisier than asphalt or wood shakes.
Mold can grow on anything, including glass, so given your climate, whatever type of roof you have will need to be cleaned from time to time. Can some one answer my question? Thanks in advance!
It looked great for several years until triangle corners 1. Now, September , my roof is leaking because of major fractures in the tiles. Upon inspection I find five 5 tiles are broken horizontally just below the tile above and the lower pieces slide down several inches to expose the tar paper below. The sun burned through the tar paper and the plywood is now exposed to the rain. The tile also break easily in the vertical direction but the tar paper is still covered enough to prevent the sun damage and the resulting rain leakage.
I am very disappointed with the low strength and ease of breakage of the Eagle concrete tile. This roofing system is NOT recommended. I wish I had chosen either plastic polymer or aluminum. I am very confused! Concrete tile is moderate in cost, is eco-friendly and is durable but can break?!
Clay tile is long-lasting but brittle and can break? Plastic Polymer is moderate in cost, claimed to be long-lasting, is moderate in cost, can be re-cycled and has good fire and wind-resistance.
How many 3 tab shingle packs make up a square? I know a square is sq. Thank you for your help. I have roofed my house with Zinc corrugated iron sheets with blue color. However they appear to be soft and noisy during wind blows and rainfalls. Also whenever someone climbs on top of the roof they do shrink and loose its shape.
I think the manufacturer should enhance its hardness. Has anyone heard of problems with polymer synthetic slate roofs especially Da Vinci in hot climate. Any issues with shrinking, warping, changing shape? Natural materials but the processing uses a tremendous amount of fossil fuel, etc. Please what is the advantages of Zinc Roofing sheets over Aluminum roofing sheets?
That telltale sign can end up being fairly inexpensive to fix or may require a costly overhaul. The remedy may be as simple as filling in a crack with caulk, replacing a few shingles, or installing some flashing—a membrane of metal that redirects water. First, figure out what type of roofing you want. Asphalt shingles remain far and away the most popular choice because they're relatively inexpensive and easy to install. In CR's roofing tests, we found that some shingles performed better overall than others that cost more.
And some provide a beautifully layered look or come in huge arrays of colors. On-trend colors right now include light and soft greens and blues, beige and off-white, and taupe and light brown hues. Slate, tile, and metal are all good options, too, but they cost more. Tile is common in the Southwest and Florida because it reflects heat and matches Mediterranean-style houses, while slate roofing is a more popular pick in the Northeast, where Victorian and Gothic houses from the s are still quite common.
Metal roofing can be found across the country. The performance of these options on your roof really depends upon the skill of the installer, but usually they can last longer than asphalt.
A metal roof can last 50 years, and slate roofs can last more than , with diligent upkeep. Keep in mind that you may need to do only one side of the roof, rather than the entire thing; that's something to discuss with the contractor. Mind the Warranty—To a Point In your shingle shopping, you might be impressed by how many manufacturers offer a lifetime protection warranty. Warranties involve a lot of fine print like that.
Rather, our testers recommend that you place your faith in a strong shingle and a reliable contractor. That said, see whether the warranty is transferable to the next owner. If you sell your home, a transferable roof warranty can be a perk to a potential buyer. Solar Panel Considerations If you might add solar panels to your new roof, check the warranty of the shingle you're considering to make sure a solar-panel installation won't void it. You should also check for insurance coverage from the solar panel company.
While manufacturers price their product by the square, roofing is generally packaged, and sold, in bundles. By law, each shingle bundle should state clearly how many square feet it covers so that you can calculate the number of bundles you need and budget accordingly. Your homeowners insurance company may also have a network of contractors.
Look for a contractor who has been around at least five years and has a good local reputation. Request bids from at least three pros. Costs for a job as big as replacing an entire roof can vary widely, even for installing the exact same shingles. The cost of the shingles themselves should be similar no matter who installs them, but other related costs for labor and materials are what you have to look out for when comparing bids. You want a breakdown of all the costs involved: one price for the shingles, one for the labor of removing the old ones and installing the new ones, and a contingency budget that outlines the costs if your roofer discovers that the sheathing needs to be replaced.
Be sure to ask for one in writing. Among the dozens of contractor websites from across the country that we reviewed, only a few showed explicit warranties. The promises we found covered between one and 50 years, though experts told us most roof problems happen in the first couple of years.
Before giving you an estimate, a contractor should assess all components in and around your roof, including the drip edge and gutters that steer water runoff. That component, usually treated paper or synthetic sheets, serves as a weather barrier atop the decking, the flat surface—typically plywood—that lies on rafters.
In a cold climate, a roofer may suggest applying an ice-dam protection membrane in some areas to prevent ice dams that can cause water seepage. The price of the material is the starting point, but other factors also must be considered. One is the condition of the existing roof if you are remodeling a house—if old materials must be stripped off, and if the supporting structure needs repair, that will all cost money.
The shape of the roof is another contributing factor. A gable roof with few or no breaks in its planes like chimneys, vent pipes, or dormers makes for a simple roofing job. A house with multiple chimneys, intersecting rooflines the points of intersection are called valleys , turrets, skylights, or other elements will cost significantly more to roof.
Not every roofing material can be used on every roof. A flat roof or one with a low slope may demand a surface different from one with a steeper pitch. Materials like slate and tile are very heavy, so the structure of many homes is inadequate to carry the load.
Consider the following options, then talk with your designer and get estimates for the job. More often than not, if you are remodeling, the existing roof of your house will determine your choice of roofing material. Whatever your choice of roofing surface, you will probably need flashing.
