When you're doing Christmas work at home, it's also well worth buying a carbon-blade scissors, again from a garden centre or florist.

The most important thing is that you're constantly going in the same direction. Spin the wreath around as you work to make sure all the foliage goes in the one direction. There's no hard and fast rules about where stems go as long as you keep the flow going the same direction.

If you put in a piece that you think is too big, wait until the very end to give it a haircut. I've used lots of native Irish cypress here to add a nice texture and scent as well as variations in colour - and even some knobbly bits! It comes in red or green, and the waxy leaves have a nice gloss to them.

I love using it, even when it dries it has a lovely hue to it. As you're making your wreath, do the 'door bang' test every now and again - make sure that everything is secure against kids pulling at it or strong winds. I love berries in a wreath but they pop off a lot.

Trim the centre - a gentle haircut - so you can see your door. Then, you're on to the final, playful stage. Everybody turns on to sparkle at Christmas, and glitter spray can go a long way if you are so inclined.

You can spray twigs, foliage and skimmia with glitter or gold, or you can buy pre-sprayed pieces. If you love cinnamon or dried fruit, you can add that in. We love seeing your photos!
